It is a very charming town with colonial architecture located 28 km from São Paulo city. Many artists and artesans show and sell their work through Embu´s shops and art galleries. Regarding the founding of Embu, the legend tells that there was a Jesuit priest named Belchior who, came up the mountain from Itanhaen city in search of a place to set up the first Jesuits school. After many days walking in the dense forest, he became lost and was found wandering by a local indian who took him to his tent. However, the indian disappeared after going out to get some water for the priest. Allegedly the indian was killed by a huge snake called M´Boy. Belchior buried the indian according to indian custom and set up a little chapel where the indian´s dead body was found. From M´Boy, the name of the town evolved to Embu.
